WHAT IS 'MAIDEN NEWTON AT WAR' ALL ABOUT?
In August 2006 the idea of having a large event in order to raise money for local village organisations within
Maiden Newton and Frome Vauchurch, was put forward for consideration. A few subjects were considered, but the chosen theme was
WWII and the
1940s. This subject was chosen as it effected everyone in our country from the busiest town to the peace and quiet of the Dorset countryside.
WWII effected everyone of all ages, young and old alike, and although times were hard the one thing that stood out in everyone's mind was the peoples courage, determination and most importantly, community spirit. To celebrate this, the idea of a
WWII - 1940s themed weekend was put into motion.
After some careful consideration as to when the event was to be held, the weekend commencing
Friday 20th June 2008 was chosen, and although the agreed date was some time away, a lot of serious thought and discussion would obviously be required to plan such a large event. This is particularly true due to the size of the village along with the possibility of thousands of people attending the event. Thankfully, there is a high level of interest in our chosen theme.
A public meeting was arranged to give residents of
Maiden Newton the chance to air any concerns they may have as these would naturally affect whether or not the event was to proceed. The meeting (advertised around the village and leaflets posted through all doors) was duly held in the Village Hall on 23rd November 2006. A number of residents from
Maiden Newton as well as nearby villages attended and the idea of the
WWII theme put forward for public debate.
Questions where asked and duly answered. A few concerns were raised and quickly put to rest. Gladly, a unanimous and positive response was received and the event was given the 'ALL CLEAR!'.
